What is a
Roller Blind?
A roller blind is a cylindrical component containing a torsion spring (also referred to as a rotary spring), which is firmly clamped at both ends and wound around an axis. By twisting this spring at one end (while the other end remains fixed), spring tension is generated, which allows various types of coverings or curtains to be rolled up and moved. Examples of such coverings or types of coverings include fabrics, tarpaulins, nets, films, roller shutters/roller shutter curtains, rolling grilles, metal aprons, and many more.
Spring shafts, also known as roller blind springs, can therefore generate a mechanical drive force and thus replace motors or make electrical energy unnecessary. Alternatively, spring shafts can also be used as a counterbalance mechanism for electric drives.
Through the development and production of spring shafts and spring mechanisms since 1886, Oskar Widmer GmbH has become the market leader in spring shaft technology. Numerous patents and innovations demonstrate this.

What is the difference?
In technical terminology, various terms are often used, sometimes synonymously. The term spring shaft refers to the complete assembly, including the spring drive, end bearings, and the outer shaft or outer tube onto which the covering is mounted. Examples of technical terms include:

- Spring drum
- Self-rolling mechanism
A spring mechanism therefore refers to the “bare” spring drive, i.e., without an outer tube and without bearings on the opposite side of the spring. Example terms include:
